History in Art

For the last few months, I have been trying to soak up as much knowledge as I could on African Americans and their contributions in art.  I did not know that there were so many people of color within the art field in the 1800s.  We always hear about Van Gogh, Renoir, Cassatt, Munch, Michelangelo,  and etc, but we barely ever hear about artists of color.  We have Henry O Tanner, Edmonia Lewis,  Romare Bearden, Gordan Parks, and Duncanson just to name a few.   Those are artists that should be recognized as well in classrooms.
Now, it is important for me to know my history.   Sometimes you need to see that someone that looks like you understands the struggle.   Art is a male, white, dominated field that you have to be considered exceptional to be respected.   Reading about these artists,  what they went through, how they lived,  and how they drew/painted helps keep my goal in focus.
I want to be a wealth of knowledge on the topic.  The only way that’ll happen is thru hitting the books and asking questions.
